I know that some people have misgivings about our soon-to-be Taoiseach, but I can set minds at rest regarding his stance on ice cream, since we have photographic proof that he’s supportive of this particular confection. Upwards and onwards…
Breast Milk Ice Cream?
Back in the Autumn, we had a television crew in our Wicklow Street shop for what was to be a new season of the RTE comedy show, Anonymous. The gag was Amanda Brunker dressed as an old biddy, giving out samples of breast milk ice cream (it was actually our Kerry Cream flavour). Fun was had by all.
Now, however, it seems less like a gag, since PR firm Taylor Herring has this post, stating that the icecreamists in Covent Garden are actually serving up the stuff. Certainly that’s bound to get some attention for them, but it wouldn’t really be my thing. However, it’s almost worth a flight over. Simply as a professional. Market research and all.
Very Minty Milkshake for Paddy’s Day
St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner, and if you want a hint of green in your dessert to celebrate, you have a couple options. You could grab a bottle of green food colouring and add it to most any dessert that is light in colour – from whipped cream to vanilla ice cream to creme caramel. It’s effective, but it’s something we would never do at Murphys. We’re stubborn that way, and on point of principle, we never use colouring – natural or otherwise. Of course, that limits the options for a green Patrick’s Day dessert of flavour.
However, it can be done, and the obvious candidates for green flavours are matcha (green tea) or mint. The latter makes an especially tasty milkshake if you are a minty kind of person, and I like mine strong. Blending fresh mint leaves with ice cream and milk makes also creates a pleasing light green hue that gives a nod to the patron saint of Ireland. Here’s how you can do it:
Fresh Very Minty Milkshake
Ingredients (serves 1):
2 scoops vanilla ice cream
1 cup milk.
30 fresh mint leaves (removed from the stalk)
What to do:
1. Put the ice cream, mint and milk in the blender or food processor and allow it to soften for at least two minutes. Blending it straight away will leave lumps of ice cream in the shake.
2. Blend until smooth, on high speed.
3. Garnish with cream and a mint leaf.
4. If you really like mint, add more leaves!

Let’s Not Forget We Love This Place!
With all the doom and gloom about, it’s hard sometimes to see the upside of Ireland, which is why I like this video from Failte Ireland.
It’s given me a little pep in my step!
Is Artisan Ice Cream Dying?
Here’s my report from the SIGEP (the ice cream convention) in Rimini.

The family and I have headed off for a little break in Venice, where it’s foggy and mystical this time of year. We’re staying in Sant’Elena, a quiet island a bit at the periphery, but still within walking distance of Piazza San Marco. It’s the island where my partner was born.
I’ll post more when I get a chance!
