Staffing Shortage in Dingle

Help wanted

It often is hard to find good staff in Dingle, but this year things are verging on the ridiculous. Our shop manager, Russell, is leaving us, and we’re going into the season short four people in our Dingle shop. We have ads in and notices up, and we are getting very few replies indeed.

Staff shortages are a Dingle phenomenon, at least when it comes to the service industry, and the situation has become more difficult in recent times. We have loads of interest every time we hire in Killarney, but take a walk through Dingle, and you will see a parade of help-wanted signs in shop and restaurant windows. If it wasn’t for the influx of foreign nationals, I think Dingle would have to shut down.

What to do? It’s always been possible to pick up a few college students, but that doesn’t help much come October, when we still need staff and students are back in school. We need a core of permanent employees.

It would seem that people like myself and my brother, who think that living in Dingle and working in an ice cream shop is about as cool as it gets, are very rare indeed…

  1. In another life and different set of circumstances I would love to work there. And start a campaign to veganise ye all 🙂

Sorry to hear this Kieran – it is a problem for a lot of small businesses in Kilkenny as well.

  2. My little one would move there in a second and think I was the most amazing mom in the world if I worked in Murphy’s (believe me she suggests it every time we go there). If only Dingle wasn’t nearly 100 miles from her school…
I saw all the staff notices up at Easter, hope the situation resolves itself soon.

  3. Id be back in a second if I wasnt stuck on work placement!! The best job, in the best place in Ireland to be for the summer! Ill miss the buzz and the craic!
    I hope you get sorted!

  4. I’ll certainly remember this if I ever decide to run away from home! The Dingle Peninsula is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen, and Dingle itself just oozes charm (and great food–to include your ice cream!) None of use wanted to leave…

So sorry we missed you, Kieran, when we stopped by your shop–but your ice cream was lovely!
