I'm bowled over, Kieran, thanks a lot. I instantly wanted the La Pavoni job, but it appears to be every bit as expensive as it looks. I'm happy to stick with my espresso pot for the nonce.

One of the guys in the aroma (?) coffee stall at the Meeting House Square food market, of a Saturday gave a tip on using the espresso pot to the effect that it's all in the wrist. Every so often, as it steams, you lift it slightly from the heat and rotate the bottom chamber over the heat. Might help with preventing burning. Works for me.

Theirs is the best cappuccino in Dublin for my money, and it's only available once a week (I don't go in for this hidebound Italian stuff that the cappuccino is a breakfast drink only, especially in this boreal clime).

A coffee with a great crema is the one served after a meal in Pizza Stop, between Chatham Street and Harry Street, off Grafton Street.

I'll be into Murphy's in Dingle to sample the brew very soon.

...and perhaps one of those chocolate chip cookies with vanilla ice-cream on the side.
